After Nigeria’s 3-0 win over Tunisia in their opening game of the African Women’s Cup of Nations, Coach Justine Madugu expressed satisfaction with the victory but emphasized the need for his team to capitalize on scoring opportunities. Despite the convincing win, Madugu noted that his team missed several chances and vowed to work on correcting those lapses.
“We had the opportunity of scoring more goals, which we did not take. We’ll work on the team to correct the lapses,” Madugu said. He emphasized the importance of teamwork, fairness, and transparency, stating that every player would get a chance to play as the competition progresses.
Babajide’s Emotional Goal Celebration
Meanwhile, Omorinsola Babajide, the Super Falcons’ star of the game against Tunisia, revealed that her goal celebration was in honor of the late Diogo Jota. On her WAFCON debut, Babajide played a crucial role, providing the assist for Asisat Oshoala’s opener and scoring herself in the closing minutes of the first half. Babajide explained that her celebration was a tribute to Jota, with whom she played at Liverpool, and his brother.
“It was for Diogo Jota and his brother as well. So that was like one of the biggest celebrations at the club,” Babajide said. “I just wanted to do something for him. He was one of my best players at the club when I was there as well, and may the souls of both of them rest in peace.”
