The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has issued a directive to its affiliate members and all workers nationwide to immediately shut down the economy if the Nigerian Police detain the Congress President, Comrade Joe Ajaero.

This follows an invitation extended by the Police to Comrade Ajaero for questioning, with allegations that include involvement in terrorism financing.

In response to this development, the NLC convened an emergency National Executive Council (NEC) meeting at Labour House. During the meeting, the Congress resolved to request additional time from the Police, allowing them to consult with their legal team.

Addressing workers who had gathered at Labour House in solidarity with the NLC President and prepared to accompany him to the Police headquarters, NLC Deputy President Kabiru Ado Sani emphasized that the invitation to Ajaero was effectively an invitation to all workers.

“At the end of the meeting, we reached several resolutions,” Sani stated. “As a committed labor center, we abide by the rule of law and due process. We will honor the invitation of the Nigerian Police, as we are a legitimate organization. However, we are requesting an extension of time, after consulting with our lawyers, because the invitation was only received yesterday, asking the Congress President to report by 10 AM today.”

Sani further clarified that while they are complying with the process, this does not legitimize the charges against the Congress leadership. He also announced that if Ajaero is arrested or detained, the NLC will mobilize its affiliates and all workers across the country to halt their services.

“This organization belongs to all of us,” Sani continued. “We must do everything possible to safeguard its safety. We thank you for your support, and ask that you remain calm and return to your workplaces while awaiting further instructions from the leadership.”

He concluded by assuring the workers that any developments will be communicated promptly, urging them to stay alert for future directives.
