New National Minimum Wage Bill Sent To The National Assembly By President Tinubu

The President of the Federal Republic Of Nigeria, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has sent the new national minimum wage to the National Assembly, for approval and consideration.

In the President’s letter, he conveyed his request to the lawmakers, and it was read during the plenary of the House of Representatives on Tuesday, July 23. A similar letter to the Senate was also read on the floor of the upper chamber.

President Tinubu also asked for their approval on the reduction time, for periodic review of the national minimum wage from five years to three years.

The bill is expected to legalise the ₦70,000 minimum wage agreed upon between Organised Labour, the Organised Private Sector and the federal government.

President Tinubu, asked for a fast approval of the bill to make sure that, there is immediate execution for the benefit of Nigerian workers in his letter to the lawmakers.

The new minimum wage is expected to take effect from April 2024, when signed into law, which means, workers will be paid arrears of their increase from this period.

The President also wrote to the lawmakers that, he is seeking amendment to the Nigeria Police Act which is in accordance with section 58 of the 1999 Constitution as amended.

The amendment is to modify the Police in relation to the appointment and tenure of office of the Inspector General of Police.

The requests were contained in the Police Act (Amendment) Bill, 2024, seeking to amend the Police Act 2020 with respect to the appointment and tenure of the Inspector General of the Police.
