The nominations are out for the 2024 Ballon d’Or Awards with the ceremony itself set to take place in Paris at the end of October.
Argentina and Inter Miami’s Lionel Messi was the surprise winner last year. But injury has hampered the Argentine this season. So the veteran striker is not expected to scoop a ninth award.
Last year, Barcelona and Spain midfielder Aitana Bonmati secured the fifth edition of the Ballon d’Or Feminin. With her 2023 win the first time the 25-year-old has received the award. Bonmati, who won the World Cup Golden Ball, helped Spain win the 2023 World Cup in Australia-New Zealand.
Ballon d’Or, created by the France Football in 1956, is regarded as soccer most prestigious award all over the world.
Blackpool and England’s Stanley Matthews was its first winner, while Lionel Messi is the record holder with eight wins.
The winner is selected following the votes of a select number of journalists from around the world. Up until 2022, votes were based on player performance during the calendar year.
As of this year, jurors have been instructed to take into account the previous season with the event held in Paris since 2016.
The event has also branched out to including prizes of best young player, women player, goalkeeper etc.
