Bayero University, Kano (BUK) celebrated the induction of 39 graduates from its Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences on Thursday, 24 October, 2024 at the university’s old campus in Kano. This event highlighted their critical role in advancing healthcare and addressing the drug abuse crisis in Kano State and Nigeria.

Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf spoke through the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Abubakar Labaran. He urged the new pharmacists to use their qualifications to combat the growing drug abuse problem. Additionally, he encouraged them to serve as ambassadors for BUK and uphold professional ethics.

“The certificate you have received can be used positively or negatively. I urge you to abide by the professional guidelines of your field,” the governor cautioned. His words emphasised the responsibility that comes with their qualifications.

BUK Vice-Chancellor Prof. Sagir Abbas Adamu echoed this sentiment. He stressed that learning does not end with graduation. “You are entering a dynamic field that is constantly evolving. You must continuously adapt, innovate, and contribute to new discoveries,” he stated. He encouraged the inductees to engage deeply with research, innovation, and technology transfer.

“It is in this spirit that I encourage you to focus not just on your careers but also on shaping the future of healthcare,” Prof. Abbas added. He noted that modern pharmacy extends beyond dispensing medication; it involves creating solutions for health challenges.

During the professional oath-taking, Pharm. Ibrahim Baba Shehu, the Registrar of the Pharmacists Council of Nigeria, was represented by Dr. Anthony Idoko. He reminded the new pharmacists of the high standards and ethics expected in their profession. Dr. Idoko urged them to remain resilient during their mandatory one-year internship.

Zubair Abdulkadir, the best-graduating student, expressed gratitude on behalf of the graduates. “I feel deeply humbled to have reached this stage,” he remarked. His sentiment resonated with fellow graduates as they looked forward to their future roles in Nigeria’s healthcare system.
