A tragic incident occurred on Sunday in Idiroko, Ogun State, where gunmen believed to be hired assassins killed Yomi Adetula, the Shepherd-in-charge of a Celestial Church of Christ during a church service. The assailants, numbering about six and armed with AK-47 rifles, entered the Hebrew Celestial Church where Adetula was preaching and fatally shot him. Witnesses reported that the attackers were dressed in Celestial Church garments and dismembered the pastor’s body before leaving the scene.
Adetula held the position of Idiroko Unit Commander for the Ogun State Community, Social Orientation and Safety Corps (So-SAFE Corps), a community security organization supported by the state government. Initial investigations suggest that Adetula was involved in conflicts with a smuggling cartel in the Idiroko area, which resulted in his church being forcibly closed in December by suspected smugglers. He was also reportedly transferred to the Federal Capital Territory the same month.
Soji Ganzalo, State Commander of So-SAFE Corps, expressed shock at the news and promised a thorough investigation. He committed to collaborating with security agencies to aid in apprehending the suspects responsible for Adetula’s murder.
