In a tragic incident, four police officers were killed by unidentified gunmen at a checkpoint in Nkanu Local Government Area of Enugu State. The attack took place on the evening of Sunday, August 18, 2024, at the well-known Four Corner Junction in Ozalla.
Reports indicate that the officers were conducting a routine stop-and-search operation when the assailants opened fire, resulting in the deaths of the policemen. A video circulating on social media shows the aftermath of the attack, with the lifeless body of one of the officers lying on the road, and a police patrol vehicle engulfed in flames nearby.
Former Minister of Information, Dr. Frank Nweke Jr., has condemned the violent act. In a statement posted on X, he expressed his shock and sorrow over the incident.
“Earlier today, the Ozalla community in Nkanu West LGA, Enugu, faced the terror of so-called unknown gunmen who attacked policemen on checkpoint duty at the Four Corner Junction along the Enugu-Port Harcourt Expressway. Their patrol vehicle was also set ablaze,” he stated.
Dr. Nweke Jr. extended his condolences to the families of the fallen officers and to the Enugu Police Command. “It is unacceptable for anyone to lose their life in such a brutal manner while simply carrying out their duty to protect citizens and maintain public order,” he added.
