The Lagos State Government, under the leadership of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has declared Tuesday, August 20, 2024, as a public holiday for all public servants in the state in celebration of the 2024 Isese Day. This day has been set aside to honor and support traditional religious worshippers and the preservation of Yoruba cultural heritage.
In an official circular (Ref. No: CIR/HOS/124/Vol.1/66) issued by the Head of Service, Bode Agoro, the Governor’s approval was announced, emphasizing the government’s commitment to promoting indigenous traditions. The circular read:
“It is hereby notified for general information that this year’s Isese Day Celebration will hold on Tuesday, 20th August 2024. In emphasizing commitment to give necessary support to traditional institutions, as well as enhance the promotion of indigenous tradition by preserving cultural heritage, Mr. Governor, Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu has approved that Tuesday, 20th August, 2024, be declared a work-free day for public servants in the State.”
Public offices, including the courts, will resume regular operations on Wednesday, August 21, 2024, at 8:00 a.m. All accounting officers are expected to ensure that this information is widely circulated.
Isese Day celebrates the Yoruba religion, “Ìṣẹ̀ṣe,” which encompasses the traditional spiritual and religious practices of the Yoruba people, found predominantly in Southwestern Nigeria, including Lagos, as well as parts of Benin and Togo.
