The federal government announced on Monday that it has begun distributing 10 trucks of 50 kg of rice to each state. The rice sold at designated centers for N40, 0000, is part of the government’s efforts to address poverty and high cost of living.
The Federal Executive Council (FEC) stated that there is no need for the planned national protest on August 1, as the government is already addressing many of the demands put forward by the organizers. President Bola Tinubu has emphasized that he is acting on behalf of the youth by addressing their grievances.
Distribution of Rice to Combat Poverty
Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, disclosed that 10 trucks of rice have been dispatched to each state as a measure to address poverty and the high cost of living. This was said while addressing the State House correspondents at the end of the council meeting. He said, “The government has dispatched 10 trucks of rice to each state, sold at 50% of its cost, N40,000 per bag. Centers have been created across all states for this purpose.”
Idris acknowledged that the supply might not be sufficient but described it as a necessary first step. More interventions are planned, with significant investments going into the agricultural sector to ensure food availability and price reductions.
Government Efforts and Appeal to Protesters
Idris highlighted various government initiatives addressing the protesters’ demands, such as the disbursement of student loans for over two million students and the MTT program aiming to employ about three million youths. He also mentioned the expected cost reductions from the CNG initiative, which will lower transportation costs by transitioning from fossil fuels to renewables.
The Minister appealed to those planning the protest to reconsider, noting the risk of violence if unscrupulous elements hijack protests. He emphasized the government’s commitment to addressing issues in healthcare, agriculture, infrastructure, and education, ensuring that no one is left behind.
