The Lagos State Government has distanced it’s from the upcoming Oro festival rumours that is said to have collided with the #EndBadGovernance protest, that is to take place in the 1st of August to 15th of August.
Gboyega Akosile, the Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to the state’s Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, had said no one questions the government, when other religions hold their activities.
He also said that the same respect should be accorded to the traditional worshippers because they have the right to worship according to the constitution and can go about their lawful exercises.
“Oro festival is like Muslim and Christian activities and has no business with Lagos State government interference. We don’t have a hand in how any religious group goes about their lawful activities.”
“The protesters have their rights just like the traditional worshippers who want to perform their activities too. What is our business in that?”
“If anybody wants to protest, they should come out and carry out their right lawfully by not disrupting the business activities in the state. We will not allow the peace of the state to be disrupted. No responsible government will allow it.”
Talking of the 2020 #EndSARS protest, which led to the destruction of property and loss of lives in the state, Akosile said that the state government disapproves its recurrence and would make sure to stop it from happening again.
Meanwhile, it had been earlier reported that, some Nigerians are planning on protesting against the economic hardship of the country.
The protest which has been gaining momentum on social media platforms, is said to take place in the 1st of August to 15th of August 2024, across all states in the country including the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
The President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has appealed to Nigerians to stop the protest from happening, and also, to give the Federal Government more time to tackle the economic hardship in the country, and also, to be more patience.
However, the Peoples Democratic Party Presidential Candidate for 2023 elections, Atiku Abubakar, has shown his full support towards the planned nationwide protest.
Atiku blasted the government of Tinubu for making attempts to suppress the protesters, saying it was an exercise in futility.
He said that Nigerians, including supporters of Tinubu and the ruling APC, are affected by the hunger, anger, and hopelessness caused by the government’s incompetence and cluelessness.
