Newcastle University Sanctuary Scholarships 2024/25

Newcastle University is dedicated to promoting social justice and is proud to offer Sanctuary Scholarships to support students facing challenges due to their immigration status. These scholarships provide full tuition fee coverage along with a bursary to help with living costs, enabling recipients to focus on their studies without financial barriers.

Scholarship Benefits

Recipients of the Sanctuary Scholarship receive:

This comprehensive support is designed to make higher education accessible to students who have been displaced or are seeking asylum.

Eligibility Requirements

To apply for the Newcastle University Sanctuary Scholarship, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Be an asylum seeker, the child of an asylum seeker, an unaccompanied minor seeking asylum, or a refugee not eligible for government aid through Student Finance.
  • Be a UK resident at the time of application, with preference given to residents of North East England (Tyne and Wear, County Durham, Northumberland, Cleveland, and North Cumbria).
  • Be enrolled or intend to enroll in a degree program at Newcastle University (preference will be given to first-degree applicants).
  • Meet the academic entry requirements for their chosen degree program.
  • Demonstrate English language proficiency, either through the course’s requirements or through equivalent qualifications.

Application Process

To apply for the Sanctuary Scholarship, applicants should complete Newcastle University’s online application form. The application requires:

  • Proof of immigration status
  • A reference letter from someone who has known the applicant for a significant period and understands their circumstances

The reference letter plays a vital role in the selection process. It should address the following points:

  1. The applicant’s personal and financial circumstances and any barriers they’ve overcome in their educational journey.
  2. The applicant’s suitability for their intended course of study and their educational ambitions.
  3. Contributions the applicant has made to their community or school/college life, if applicable.
  4. Any additional information relevant to the applicant’s situation.
  5. How the applicant would benefit from the support provided by the Sanctuary Scholarship.

Note: References must be signed, dated, and written on official letterhead.

Before applying, applicants are encouraged to carefully review the application guidelines provided by Newcastle University. The deadline for applications is midnight on Friday, April 4, 2025. Late submissions will not be accepted.
