NIWA: being sanitation on EKO water to boost safety

The National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) has commenced removing water hyacinths from key water channels in Lagos to improve transportation and enhance safety for waterway users.

Sarat Braimah, the Lagos Area Manager for NIWA, disclosed in a statement that the ongoing project will target major channels with high boat traffic, starting with Omu Creeks and the Ikorodu Water Channels

.Braimah noted that while the Omu Creeks have already been cleared, the Ikorodu channels will require at least a week of intensive clearing, which includes waste removal and the disposal of invasive water plants.

“This initiative aligns with NIWA’s core mandate to ensure smooth and safe navigation for boat operators and other stakeholders,” Braimah explained.

“With the Yuletide season approaching and an anticipated increase in boat traffic, we want to ensure everything is in place for safe operations. The season also brings a resurgence of water hyacinths along Lagos waterways, so it’s best to clear them proactively.”

The project is expected to extend to the Badagry and Apapa water channels. However, the Ikorodu channel is currently prioritised, given that weeds from there can spread to other coastal areas in Lagos.

Braimah added: “We are working tirelessly to sustain this effort, with river marshals actively monitoring boating operations during this period. It’s a costly and challenging project, but our staff are dedicated, working daily to ensure its success.”
