Overview

Each year, the Pierre Elliott Trudeau Foundation offers up to 15 doctoral scholarships to outstanding Canadian and international students pursuing research in the humanities and social sciences. These scholarships support projects aligned with the Foundation’s four key themes:

  • Human Rights and Dignity
  • Responsible Citizenship
  • Canada and the World
  • People and their Natural Environment

PhD research programs in the humanities and social sciences, specifically addressing one or more of the Foundation’s key themes.

Scholarship Benefits

Recipients of the Pierre Elliott Trudeau Foundation Doctoral Scholarship receive the following:

  • Financial Support:
    • CAD 40,000 annually for three years to cover tuition and living expenses.
    • CAD 20,000 annually for three years for language learning, research-related travel, networking, and participation in the Foundation’s leadership program.
  • Additional Benefits:
    • Membership in a vibrant community of Scholars, Mentors, and Fellows who are leaders in their respective fields.
    • Leadership training facilitated by Mentors and Fellows.
    • Opportunities to enhance proficiency in Canada’s official languages (French and English) and Indigenous languages.
    • Lifetime access to the Foundation’s alumni network.

Eligibility Criteria

To qualify for this scholarship, applicants must:

  1. Be enrolled in the first or second year of a full-time doctoral program or already accepted into a program with an expected completion date of 2026 or later.
  2. Pursue research that aligns with the humanities or social sciences and is relevant to Canada’s future.
  3. Conduct doctoral work focused on at least one of the Foundation’s four key themes.
  4. Be either:
    • A Canadian citizen studying at a Canadian or foreign institution.
    • A permanent resident of Canada or an international student enrolled in a doctoral program at a Canadian institution.

Application Process

  1. Online Registration: Applicants must register and submit their application via the Foundation’s online portal.
  2. University Nomination: Once registered, your application will be linked to your university. Each institution has its own internal selection process and deadlines for nominating candidates. Applicants should contact their university for details on the internal process and deadlines.
  3. Final Submission Deadline: Universities must submit their final nominations to the Foundation by 25 November 2024, at 4:00 PM EST.
