“Play Significant Role In Disaster Risk Reduction” – Minister

The Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Ahmed Dangiwa has called on town planners, that they should play a more significant role in disaster risk reduction and resilience building in urban areas.

Speaking at the Town Planners Day event in Abuja on Wednesday. Dangiwa commended the organisers for choosing the theme. “Disaster, Risk Reduction, and Resilience in the FCT.”

Dangiwa said, “The theme is not only apt but also timely. Especially as we face natural and man-made disasters globally, with the Federal Capital Territory being no exception.”

The minister, represented by a fellow of the institute, David Olakunle. Underscored the increasing frequency and intensity of natural disasters. Stressing that the role of town planners is more critical than ever.

“Your expertise and foresight are essential in developing strategies to reduce risks and vulnerabilities in our cities,” he added.

Dangiwa highlighted the importance of integrating disaster risk reduction strategies into urban development planning, design and governance.

He emphasised that this approach is vital for safeguarding lives, livelihoods, and the environment as cities continue to grow and expand.

Dangiwa also revealed ongoing federal efforts to enhance urban resilience across the country.

Dangiwa noted that resilient cities are more likely to attract investments, as investors seek locations that can withstand disasters and other shocks.
