The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has conducted a series of significant drug busts across Nigeria, seizing consignments of cocaine and pharmaceutical opioids cleverly hidden in sanitary pads, hair treatment cream containers, and other unsuspecting items. These intercepted shipments were destined for the United Kingdom, Ireland, and Cyprus.
At three separate courier firms in Lagos, NDLEA operatives discovered at least 54 parcels of cocaine, weighing a total of nearly 2 kilograms, hidden in hair cream containers. The parcels were intended for delivery in Ireland and the UK. Additionally, a consignment of 525 pills of tramadol and ecstasy (MDMA), concealed in ladies’ sanitary pads and en route to Cyprus, was also intercepted.
Further operations led to the seizure of 200 ampoules of promethazine and pentazocine injections hidden in food items and herbs destined for London, UK. Another shipment of tramadol pills concealed in granulated melon from Cameroon and headed to South Africa was intercepted by operatives.
In a related development, a joint operation at the Port Harcourt International Airport led to the interception of 550,000 tramadol pills in a cargo shipment from Delhi, India. A suspect linked to the seizure has been arrested.
The NDLEA’s crackdown extended beyond drug shipments. In Ekiti State, the agency, with support from the Nigerian Army, destroyed over 100,000 kilograms of cannabis spread across 51 hectares of farmland within the Ise-Ekiti forest reserve. Several suspects were also arrested in connection with drug trafficking across various states, including Bauchi, Jigawa, Kogi, Borno, and Kano.
Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd), the Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of NDLEA, commended the agency’s officers for their relentless efforts in the war against drug abuse and urged them to continue their work in reducing both drug supply and demand across the nation.
